Match Report
Dinbych’s encouraging pre-season campaign continued with a second victory in a few weeks against opposition from Manchester. On a sweltering day and a concrete hard pitch both sides overcame the difficult conditions to provide a feast of running rugby as each side had periods of dominance scoring a number of spectacular tries.
Trafford started strongly with their heavier and more experienced pack putting Dinbych under heavy pressure and they took the lead in the 6th minute when scrum half Jamie Parker broke from a scrum near the Dinbych line to cross under the posts for a try converted by outside half Aran Booth. The visitors continued to press strongly in the Dinbych 22 but were repulsed by an excellent defensive display by Dinbych with head on tackles halting Trafford moves at source near to set pieces.
Dinbych used their limited possession well with good support play and grafting at breakdowns to maintain possession and build attacks. This gave them the momentum to open their scoring in the 20th minute when centre Aidyn Jones counter attacked from his own half to outpace the Trafford defence for an excellent but unconverted try. Dinbych then took the lead with another long range attack initiated by No.8 Liam Allsup and support from Josh Osborne ending with Oli Owen crossing for a converted try. Dinbych went further ahead with an excellent solo try by lock Louis Galley who ran in from halfway.
Trafford the hit back just on half time when left wing Livings crossed in the corner for an unconverted try after good approach play by the visitors.
Leading by 19 points to 12 at the interval Dinbych soon increased their lead in the 3rd minute of the second half when Aidyn Jones went over for his second try after regaining possession from his own chip ahead near the Trafford line. Dinbych flanker Robin Williams then forced his way over from a tap penalty near the visitor’s line with the conversion taking them ahead by 33 points to 12. Trafford then replied with a try by prop Abdul Mirza converted by Aran Booth. Dinbych again responded with Aidyn Jones scoring his hat trick try with a break from a scrum on halfway. This was converted by Oli Owen.
Trafford then began to dominate in the final quarter as they chipped away Dinbych’s lead with lock Jay Gobbett’s forcing his way over from a driving maul following a short range line out. Full back Sonekan then added an unconverted try. Then a counter attack from the visitor’s half just before the final whistle ended with wing Oscar Williams crossing for an unconverted try but still one score short of victory.
